Parent Compact and Involvement Policies
Each year Laurel Cinematic Arts & Creative Technologies Magnet stakeholders agree to the parent-student-teacher compact. In order to ensure that all families participate actively in the Panther community, please use the following guidelines to support your child in receiving the most from their educational experience:
Laurel parents and families agree to:
- Talk to child(ren) regularly about the value of education
- Communicate with your child's teacher when there is a concern
- Monitor T.V and electronic device use following recommended free time use by age
- Ensure child is reading a paper book at least 15 min. five days per week
- Volunteer at least 5-hours at the school each school year (apply to volunteer at volunteerapp.lausd.net)
- Make sure that their child attends school every day, on time, and with homework/reading completed
- Support the school’s discipline, dress code policy, and cellphone policy.
- Make every effort to attend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, Open House, Back to School Night, student showcase events, and Parent led fund raising events.
- Ensure that their child gets adequate sleep, regular medical attention, and proper nutrition
- Respect the school, staff, students and families
- Read and listen to communications sent home from school
- Activate and regularly check Parent Portal to monitor student progress
- Fill out the LAUSD School Experience survey in a timely manner
Consider the following screen-time guidance from the American Pediatrics Association:
- Until 18 months of age limit screen use to video chatting along with an adult (for example, with a parent who is out of town).
- Between 18- and 24-months screen time should be limited to watching educational programming with a caregiver.
- For children 2-5, limit non-educational screen time to about 1 hour per weekday and 3 hours on the weekend days.
- For ages 6 and older, encourage healthy habits and limit activities that include screens.
- Turn off all screens during family meals and outings.
- Learn about and use parental controls.
- Avoid using screens as pacifiers, babysitters, or to stop tantrums.
- Turn off screens and remove them from bedrooms at least 30-60 minutes before bedtime.
